Scattered clothes, alcoholic beverage containers, drug paraphernalia and children’s toys covered the floor and furniture in the darkened living room as child protective services workers walked inside. It’s a common scene when entering households where child abuse is suspected.

On Tuesday, that scenario was a training exercise at the Martin House Children’s Advocacy Center designed to promote cooperation among law enforcement officials, child protective services workers and children’s advocates as they investigate cases of child abuse. It was also meant to help child protective services workers stay safe in dangerous situations.
Dozens of workers from the Texas Department of Public Safety and Texas Department of Family and Protective Services took part in Tuesday’s training exercises at the Martin House in Longview, a nonprofit organization that serves victims of child abuse in Gregg, Marion and Harrison counties.
